Brownlee Lumber was established in 1973 with
the purchase of a log skidder and a log truck. Brothers
Charles and
Dan Brownlee
started out contracting themselves as loggers to area sawmills. Eventually, they
decided to build their own sawmill, and did so in 1978. The growth of the
company led them to build their first kiln in 1985, and another in 1990. In 1999, a building collapse caused by a
buildup of snow on the roof necessitated the rebuilding and reconfiguration of
the building housing the entire kiln-dried inventory and grading line. The
grading line was expanded, adding a drop saw, automatic stacker and a larger
grading deck to accommodate multiple graders. A mill fire started by a battery in a truck
parked next to the building led to the rebuilding of part of the sawmill in late
2000. The rebuilt sawmill houses a circle mill and a band resaw.
